I live and work in London. During the week I like to cycle everywhere I need to get to on my fixie. At the weekends I quite often drive out of London with a mountain bike in tow. So, whist I like cycling, I also drive on the roads.
I believe cyclists and petrol-driven road users should be able to live in harmony. But I don’t really know the best way of achieving that. Part of me thinks that cyclists should raise awareness of the issues they face, but we probably need to do it in a way that doesn’t antagonise motorists and alienate us further.
You could argue that motorists will never care about cyclists – why should they – so we should just be a vocal group demanding our rights. But you could also argue that every motorist is a potential cyclist and the only way to bring them over to our side is to demonstrate that we are a group worth belonging to.
But then again… I really don’t know. You see my dilemma.

I understand. I’m in the “lets get more people out of cars and onto bikes” camp. I cycle all the time and I want more people to discover the joy of cycling. Last year I decided to do something about the lack of cycling in my area. I spoke to loads of people and now I have started a local campaign that includes cycle training. It’s early days, but I want to make it work.
